Dog Show Judges [Aug. 14th, 2006|06:05 pm]

So much for standards, at least this past weekend in Torrance. On Saturday, Ginger won the open bitch class, no problem. Her head and tail were up. She was having fun with her handler. She's also at her fighting weight, 43 pounds. She looks good. In winners she ended up losing to a dog with a really crooked tail. Okay, it was one of Mark's girls, so we're not going to mourn too much. And Minnie won BOB. So, may be the judge wasn't such a lost cause.

Sunday. A totally different story with this judge. Funky looking dog won, according to my friends who were ring side. Oh, I'm never ring side if Ginger's showing. She has a total meltdown if she knows I'm around. Anyway, crazy judge puts Ginger fourth in her class. Shouldn't have happened. In any case, judge liked a refine head. Ginger has a broad head. But, look at any of the Vizsla books and you'll see dogs who look just like Ginger. Whatever.

Strategy from this point forward, especially since she's got a handler, and it's just too much effort to keep bringing Ginger up to Susan in the Bay Area, we're just going to sign up for shows where she has a rat's ass of winning with the judge. Too bad she was fat in March. She'd be finished by now.

8 points, 7 to go. She still needs her majors.

What have I gotten myself into? [Aug. 12th, 2006|10:18 pm]

First entry, open box, head blank ...

Head not blank ... got chocolate on the brain and thinking about my last botched batch of brownies. I did not have any cocoa or enough dark chocolate to sub, so I threw in a few blocks of milk chocolate I had in my pantry. Not good. Too sweet. Ick. Went out for more dark chocolate, melted it and mixed with heavy cream to make a glaze that I spread over the brownies. Then brownies were passable. Anyway, here is a recipe that turned out alright (modified from Alton Brown's Cocoa Brownie recipe):

Dark Chocolate Brownies

Butter to grease pan
Flour to dust buttered pan
4 large eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
6 oz melted butter
6 oz dark chocolate
1/2 cup cocoa, sifted (can replace with 4 to 6 oz of dark chocolate)
1/2 cup flour, sifted
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Butter and flour a 13.5" x 9" pan.
Melt butter in a metal bowl over a boiling pot of water. Turn water down to a simmer and add dark chocolate. Stir until smooth.
In a mixer, beat eggs at medium speed until fluffy and light yellow. Add both sugars. Add remaining ingredients and mix to combine (about one minute).
Pour batter into greased and floured pan and bake for 30 minutes. Brownies are done when a toothpick inserted in center of pan comes out clean (okay, mine come out when toothpick is almost clean ... batter is cooked, but sticks to toothpick). When done, place pan on wire rack to cool. Do not cut until it's mostly cool.
